Auschwitz Birkenau was the largest of the Nazi’s concentration camps. It is situated in southern Poland in the town of Oświęcim, 60 kilometers west of Krakow. Following the Nazi invasion in September 1939, Oświęcim became a part of Third Reich and renamed Auschwitz.
Auschwitz I served as the administrative center for the whole complex. It was founded on the 20th of May, 1940, on the basis of an old Polish army barracks. The camp was initially used for interning Polish intellectuals and resistance movement members, then also for Soviet Prisoners of War. Common Criminals, homosexuals and Jews were also imprisoned there. In 1942 the number of prisoners reached 20,000 people. The main gate to Auschwitz I is still marked with the famous and ironic sign Arbeit Macht Frei.
The construction of Auschwitz II Birkenau began in October 1941 – it is a camp where the majority of the Jews were imprisoned. It was larger than Auschwitz I and more people passed through its gates. Birkanau was an extermination camp where over one million people was killed, mainly Jews but also large numbers of Poles and Gypsies, mostly through gassing. There were also around 40 satellite camps, some of them tens of kilometers from the main camps, with prisoner populations up to several thousand.
